Celebrate Jersey Tomatoes This Saturday at the Burlington County Farmers Market
One of New Jersey’s favorite farmers markets will be celebrating one of the Garden State’s favorite foods this weekend: The Jersey Tomato.
Tomato Day at the Burlington County Farmers Market will be held Saturday, August 29, at the Burlington County Agricultural Center (500 Centerton Road, Moorestown). The special tomato-themed market day will feature farmers selling varieties of these masterpieces of Jersey Fresh produce, plus plenty of prepared foods with tomatoes as ingredients, and free samples of salsa, tomato pies and roasted tomato bisque while supplies last.
There will also be live music, a tomato cooking demonstration, tomato basket giveaways, scavenger hunts, and a children’s crafts, plus a special “Tomato Talk” with Jeff Quantrone, a Jersey tomato seed historian and the author of Jersey Tomatoes, An American Folklife and Foodway. He will be signing copies of his book and discussing tomato history, including the role of the Burlington County Agricultural Center in bringing the Stokesdale and Valiant tomato varieties back to South Jersey.
The celebration will be held during the market’s regular hours from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Jersey Fresh tomatoes are a summertime favorite, and we are excited to celebrate them and their history during this weekend’s market,” said Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. “The Burlington County Farmers Market is a fantastic place to shop for all varieties of tomatoes, prepared foods, crafts, and more. Saturday is a great time to go to shop, sample foods, or just relax and enjoy the sights, sounds, and activity at the County Agricultural Center.”
New Jersey is one of the nation’s top producers of tomatoes, harvesting more than 56 million pounds in 2025, according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics. Among the varieties of Jersey tomatoes are the soft, early season Moreton, the juicy Ramapo variety, and the flavorful Rutgers tomato.
Twenty-three different farms are scheduled to sell crops on Tomato Day, including seven who will be offering varieties of Jersey grown tomatoes. There will also be 32 food vendors and 11 artists and crafters.
“Agriculture is an essential part of Burlington County’s history, culture, and economy, and our Board is committed to ensuring the industry remains strong and vibrant for current and future generations to come,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel, the liaison to the Department of Resource Conservation, Parks, and Farmland Preservation. “The Agricultural Center and Farmers Market are essential to that goal and both are among Burlington County’s biggest success stories.”
Now in its 20th season, the Burlington County Farmers Market is held rain or shine each Saturday from May through late November. The market also holds several preseason market days in March and April, and postseason holiday markets in late November and early December.
The market was voted No. 1 in New Jersey during the 2024 American Farmland Trust poll, No. 2 in the 2025 poll, and it is currently leading all New Jersey farmers markets in this year’s poll.

It’s also recognition for our Parks staff, farms, and vendors who help make the market so successful each week.”
